Support Camp Tanako

Help us welcome the next camper

For more than seventy-five years, Camp Tanako has been a place set apart — where children, youth, and adults come to experience God through nature, build lifelong friendships, and respond to the call of the Holy Spirit. None of it happens without the friends who carry this place in their hearts.
Your gift sends a child to camp who couldn't otherwise afford to come. It welcomes a tired family to a quiet weekend by the lake. It helps a teenager hear God's voice for the first time around an evening campfire. And it keeps the cabins, trails, chapel, and lakefront ready for the next camper who walks through our gates.

We are grateful for the friends, families, churches, and former campers who make this ministry possible. There are many ways to be part of the Tanako story — choose the one that fits.

The first year I was dean, I met a young man named Tyler. He was big, country, and he loved camp. He came back the next year, and the kids in his cabin started picking on him ruthlessly. Nothing the counselors said could get them to stop.

That Thursday night, worship focused on how Jesus was treated in his last week — by his friends as much as by his enemies. The bullies realized they had treated Tyler that way. They came to him after worship and apologized. Tyler didn't want their apologies. He wouldn't accept them.

A year later, Tyler came back, and so did the ringleader. After Thursday night worship, some of the boys asked if they could go back to the chapel and pray. I went up to find them. There was the ex-bully ringleader, head in his hands, weeping — going through something hard at home. Tyler was right beside him, his arm around his old enemy, praying for him.
Later that night Tyler said, "Hammett, this is my last year at junior high camp, and I want to tell you what I learned. I learned humility, I learned unconditional love, and I learned forgiveness."
That is what your gift makes possible.

— Rev. Dr. Hammett N. Evans,
Camp Dean since 2006
